The Accidental Husband – Movie Review

Dr Emma Lloyd was played by Uma Thurman, a New York DJ-slash-agony aunt who’s happily engaged to her dependable fiance Richard, by Colin Firth. When one of her listeners, an under-used Justina Machado, is advised by her to call off her wedding, the groom-to-be decides to give her a taste of her own medicine. Later on, his hacker friend alter her marital details on the City Hall database.

On the surprising side or rather a horror, Emma discovers that she has already married when she turns up to register her imminent nuptials with Richard. She believes that there must be something wrong with the computer data, a glitch maybe, so she leaves to search Patrick while putting the record straight but he has another thinking.

There seems to be nothing right with The Accidental Husband that I don’t even know where to begin on ranting. The story line is far from great and it has the unfortunate effect of turning the male lead, whom supposed to portray the sympathetic side, into an unlikeable git who revenges by breaking up.

Nothing wonderful or worth mentioning about the acting. Thurman tries too hard and ends up just plain irritating, while you just feel embarrassed for the likes of Colin Firth, Sam Shepard whom plays as Emma’s dad and particularly Isabella Rossellini and Keir Dullea who are forced to do the sort of German accents that you usually find in movies involving comedy Nazis.

Alas, it is not the end of the stereotyping yet, as Patrick lives just above an Indian restaurant and that allow a shoehorned-in family of Indian stereotypes and the obligatory Indian dance sequence. Likewise, none of the jokes is working and the script demans the characters to do not little amount of stupid decisions that you will eventually just give up in disgust.

Bottom line, The Accidental Husband is undiminished catastrophe from beginning to the end. Better go watch Definitely, Maybe if you want a decent romantic comedy movie.
